Receptors of the CEACAM family allow the granulocyte to recognize these
microorganisms in the absence of opsonizing antibodies or complement. Receptor
stimulation induces pronounced lamellipodia-like membrane protrusions on the surface of the immune
effector cell, resulting in efficient phagocytosis and elimination of the pathogen. See the related
