COVER PICTURE:
The image shows a computer-enhanced false-color intravital micrograph of a mouse
inguinal lymph node (blue) embedded in connective tissue (brown). 15 min prior to
the recording, the animal was injected with a fluorescent antibody (mAb MECA-79) to
peripheral node addressin (PNAd), a ligand for the lymphocyte homing receptor L-selectin.
The fluorescent mAb is shown to accumulate exclusively in high endothelial venules,
which constitute the paracortical segments of the venular tree (the bright white
and yellow finger-like structures). Capillaries, arterioles (red) and all extralymphoid
vessels, which do not express L-selectin ligands, remain unlabeled. See related article
by M'Rini et al., pp.
1301-1312.
