Both T helper 1 (Th1) and Th2 cells are pathogenic in a bacterial antigen-specific model of colitis. Shown are histologic sections taken from the colons of recombination activating gene (RAG)-2-/- mice that were colonized with ovalbumin-expressing Escherichia coli and reconstituted with naive (top panel), Th1 (middle panel), or Th2 (bottom panel) CD4 T cells from DO11.10 T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic mice. Disease development was comparable in RAG-2-/- mice that received either Th1 or Th2 adoptive transfers, albeit with distinct histopathologic features; recipients of naive T cells did not develop disease.
