Cover picture: Infection of mammals with Trypanosoma brucei is characterized by upregulation of prostaglandin (PG) production, the mechanism of which is not well understood. It is now known that T. brucei synthesizes PGs from arachidonic acid (AA) and its metabolite, PGH2. The trypanosomal enzyme converting PGH2 to PGF2alpha has been identified. The image proposes a biosynthetic pathway of PGs from AA and PGH2. The scanning electron micrograph shows the long, slender bloodstream-form trypanosome taken from rats and colored pink along with erythrocytes colored orange.
