About the Cover

Cover Figure

The Journal of Experimental Medicine 192 1 Cover picture: Plasmodium falciparuminfected erythrocytes have been found to adhere to multiple erythrocyte and endothelial receptors, including platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1/CD31), CD36, blood group A antigen, nonimmune human IgM, and a heparan sulfatelike glycosaminoglycan. Fluorescence-labeled soluble PECAM-1/CD31 is shown directly bound to infected erythrocytes. Strong green fluorescence is readily detected on the infected erythrocyte surface. The intracellular parasites are counterstained with ethidium bromide. The infected (arrows) and uninfected erythrocytes are shown together in phase contrast (bottom panel). See related article in this issue by Chen et al., pp.1-9.
